The story of the Khosrow-Shirin-Farhad trilogy has long been
one of the most well-known stories of the Turk and Persian peoples, and
traces of this story can be found in many historical and literary sources
before the great poet Nizami wrote it into verse. Although Nizami made
Khosrow and Shirin the main characters of this story and dealt with the
story of Farhad in a few short chapters but person who remained the
symbol of love between the Turk and Persian nations was the Farhad, who
competed with the famous Sassanid king Khosrow Parviz in the love of
Armen princess Shirin and lost his life in this way. The identity of Farhad
is unknown in historical sources, but clues about Farhad's identity can
be found in some literary sources. Following the works of Emir Ali Shir
Navai (Farhad & Shirin), Arif Ardabili (Farhadnameh), Nizami and Amir
Khosrow Dehlavi (Khosrow & Shirin), and comparing them with Chinese
historical sources about Gokturks, leads to the conclusion that Ferhad was
most likely a Turk prince and the son of one of the Gokturk Kaghans.
