Abstract

Eastern source studies developed primarily through the processes
of interpreting and commenting on religious texts. Classical literature,
nourished by the Qur’an and the Hadith, likewise relied heavily on
authoritative sources. These interpretations and commentaries were
gradually transferred into the content of literary works, contributing to
the depth and layered meanings of literary texts. As a result, the need arose
to consult original sources in order to adequately explain and interpret
such works for readers. Consequently, commentaries began to be written
on literary texts with profound implicit meanings, and diverse interpretations
emerged.
The earliest manifestations of hermeneutics, which is widely
employed in contemporary literary methodology, also developed within
Eastern literature in close connection with the tradition of commentary
(sharh) as a scholarly discipline. In this sense, examining literary
source studies in relation to religious source studies is logically and
methodologically justified.
This article explores the relationship between literary source
studies and religious concepts, belief systems, as well as the sciences of
commentary and exegesis.
