This article presents a focused study of the problem of incorrect
placement in punctuation marks in the divans Xazoyin ul-maoni (Volumes
3–6), included in the complete collection of works of Alisher Navo’i
published between 1988 and 2003, that it has complicated the reading
and comprehension of the poems. While converting manuscript copies
into the modern script, textual scholars did not determine punctuation
marks based on the syntactic structure and semantic content of the
couplets; instead, they followed a generalized rule of placing a comma at the end of the first hemistich and a full stop at the end of the second. In
many examples, simple clauses within complex sentences were not
separated by commas, from our point of view led to a certain degree of
arbitrariness in interpreting the meaning of the couplets. This, in turn,
has contributed to the reinforcement at least ,to some extents of the
erroneous perception among readers that “Navo’i is a poet exclusively
for the elite and only a limited number of specialist scholars are capable
of reading and understanding his works”.
