Abstract

Among the Turkic languages, the Uzbek language stands out for
the remarkable diversity of its dialects and sub-dialects and possesses a
rich and complex historical development. Nearly a thousand years ago,
Mahmud al-Kashgari referred to the Karluk dialect as “Khaqani Turkic” in
his work Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk. This Karluk dialect constitutes one of the
three main dialects of the Uzbek language and has served as the foundational
dialect for the formation of the Uzbek literary language.
The article discusses studies conducted on the Karluk dialect from
the 1920s through the mid-1980s. Scholarly works by Russian and Uzbek
linguists and dialectologists produced during the 1970s and 1980s are
critically evaluated and analyzed from a contemporary perspective. In addition,
the article provides information on the geographical distribution
and areal scope of the Karluk dialect across the territory of the Republic of
Uzbekistan.
