This article analyzes the texts and translations of Alisher Navoi’s
ghazals presented in the chrestomathy section of Cagataische Sprachstudien
by Hermann Vambéry, a work that occupies an important place in the
history of Oriental studies. The study examines, from a scholarly
perspective, Vambéry’s method of presenting the ghazals in Chagatai,
their translation into German, as well as the poetic expression and
semantic divergences. Particular attention is paid to issues of semantic
shifts in the translations and to whether the poetic structure is preserved
or disrupted. In addition, the texts included in Vambéry’s chrestomathy
are compared with various editions of Navoi’s divans; the differences are
identified, and concrete evidence is provided concerning the question of
authorial and editorial intervention.
